If I Could Turn Back Time
Soundtrack Spotlight: I Wanna Go Back by Eddie Money
The music blaring out of a youthful Cate’s car radio was the perfect introduction to the fantasy Slating Magic Hour weaves in our heroes, Cate and Kyle, young lives. Eddie Money’s “I Wanna Go Back” from 1986 evokes the yearning to be young again but somehow maintain the wisdom of age … and do it “right” this time.
Given this book takes us back in time, I needed to ensure that the songs included in the story had been released and were popular during this time.
Location: Studios & Mountains
My childhood home in Phoenix backed up to the mountain range in Chapter 33
When telling a story that happened in the past, it’s essential the descriptions of time and place are correct.
I lived in Los Angeles in the early eighties, and my acting class was on a soundstage at Columbia Ranch. When Cate drives onto that film lot in 1989 (about nine years after I was there), Columbia Ranch would soon be bought by Warner Brothers; the name then changed in early 1990 to Warner Ranch.
Then again, there can be exceptions:
When I grew up in Phoenix (yes, that’s my home), the mountain in the background was called Squaw Peak. It was renamed Piestewa Peak in 2022 to be more sensitive to the indigenous culture. So, I felt awkward about the correctness of the time and decided it was best not to mention the original name - instead, only hinting at its location. Therefore, it became simply Vista.
Celebrity Gossip: Interview with Joseph Beason
This is a significant role for you, Joseph, opposite your pal, Kyle Weston. What is the story about the two of you?
Kyle and I have been friends since we were seventeen and are more like brothers. We met at an acting class and attended UCLA together for two years, making the rounds and waiting for our big break. Of course, Kyle’s success came quickly, and he has proven worthy of being a superstar … a great actor. That said, he and I have a running argument … you know, who’s the most handsome?
Well, there’s talk around town that you also have a bright future in the business.
Thank you. Early reviews from Wonderwall have thrown a lot of praise at me. It’s sort of surreal.
Tell me about the movie.
Wonderwall is a thrilling caper and an intriguing revenge story. It’s also about friendship. These three characters are practically family watching out for each other. They each have unique talents, but their most significant strength is their bond and loyalty to their team.
Tell me about your role.
Eric is the team’s binding force—levelheaded, fiercely loyal, and highly protective of Cate Leigh’s character, Stevie.
You’ve also been friends with Cate Leigh for quite a while. Fun working with your friends?
Yes and no. The three of us definitely enjoyed filming together, but we worked very hard and tried to get the best performance from each other. There’s a mutual force between us … and we all love acting.
Has this always been a dream of yours?
I guess, maybe. As a kid, I dreamed of playing for the Dodgers and hitting a game-winning home run in the World Series. By the end of high school, my dreams had become more realistic … I wanted someday to be the lead singer in The Rolling Stones once Mick Jagger retired. Now, my dream is to be the greatest actor in the world … and always have work. Hey, if you’re gonna dream, make it a good one.
Question for the Author
Antonia Gavrihel … How do you approach the process of writing? Do you have a specific routine or ritual?
I write at least every evening, even simply to tweak a previous writing or section. If fatigued, I will read one of the completed novels before sleeping. Doing so will often spur a fun dream or enlighten me about where to take my characters next. Their lives are never far from my awareness.
